About this deal

In line with Brooks' current policy of looking through the back catalogue for items that might please the contemporary audience, the concept and design of the Imperial date from around 1890, making it possibly the first-ever cycle saddle manufactured with a large hole in the middle to relieve 'perineal pressure'. A supremely comfortable saddle thanks to its flexible, hammock-like, performance that moves with every pedal stroke, the B17 is a bike seat designed for the 60° angled riding position. The B17 saddle, intended for the touring and trekking cyclist, has been Brooks' best selling model for over a century. It’s the ideal bike saddle for all cycling adventures including commuting, gravel cycling, road cycling as well as touring and trekking use. We are able to ship smaller goods (no bikes, frames, rims, wheels) to Europe/North America/Australasia; please ask us about carriage costs.

Our Brooks Male Saddle B17 has a stylish and modern look with its special copper-plated rails and hammered copper rivets. With vegetable tanned leather treated with special waxes for more supple performance straight out of the box, the B17 Softened is fitted with eyelets to be laced to the desired tension and to preserve the saddle shape. On the standard range of B17 saddles chrome plated rails were also offered as an option for the first time. First introduced in the 1890s, the B17 has survived virtually unchanged, and has firmly established itself as the saddle of choice for long distance cyclists.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary. Another much more specialised saddle, the Sprinter (4 3/8in wide) was introduced in the late 1920s; as the name implies this was intended for short distance track events. Our Aged leather is softer than our regular leather; we achieve this softness by adding a lot more moisturizer to the leather during its preparation (tanning) process. Brooks have been making saddles in England for well over 100 years and this B17 saddle is the perfect complement to your Brompton bike. But the Professional (introduced in 1963) and the Pro Select were based on the B17 Competition but with larger rivets.

It’s not just about reaching your destination but appreciating the journey and wanting to do it repeatedly; our Brooks Male Saddle will make you want to hop on your Brompton day in, day out. A year later it was renamed the Flyweight Flyer and a Flyweight version of the Narrow was introduced. This feature is, of course, widespread on current saddles and, if reports on the Imperial's comfort are anything to go by, is as worthwhile on a leather saddle (for those who need it) as on a plastic-shell design. The Competition was slightly wider initially than the Narrow (6 ¼in) and was intended strictly for the racing market.New leather is tough because of the numerous treatments of the tanning process, as well as the moulding process done at our factory. In 1959 a special version, the B17 Competition Campagnolo was introduced with longer rails set closer together offering more back and forth adjustment in conjunction with a special seatpin from Campagnolo. This saddle was not a great success – some riders complained that it was not stiff enough laterally. Our best-selling model for over 100 years, the B17 is the ideal bicycle saddle for commuting, gravel, road cycling and touring + trekking use. World War II saw a drastic reduction in the range to the basic models and it was not until 1949 that a wider range of models was offered.
