About this deal

A short story originally released exclusively as an audiobook by Audible in December 2014, narrated by actor Bill Nighy.

I know that Kevin's previous experience with the large-scale productions regularly staged by Dynamo Youth Theatre has proved invaluable. All of the power and bite of the novels with none of the watered-down pandering to American Christians that ruined the movie. Wright tries to solve the problems with passages of expository or polemical monologue, but these are frequently overlong and hard to follow. Malone to attempt to communicate with the particles, and when she does they tell her to travel into the Cittàgazze world.

And I should like to publicly acknowledge the central role played by Jasper Utley, Lead Producer, who has been utterly tireless in keeping everyone energised as well as chasing down sponsorship, press coverage and publicity outlets. His dream of establishing a Republic of Heaven leads him to use his power to raise a grand army from across the multiverse to rise up in rebellion against the forces of the Church. In The Subtle Knife, the story moves between our own world, the world of the first novel, and a third world containing the city of Cittàgazze. He started work at the Royal Court in 1965 as Casting Director and became, first, an Assistant Director there and then the first Director of the Royal Court's Theatre Upstairs, where for several years he presented an innovatory programme of new writing. During the childhood of its associated human, a dæmon can change its animal shape at will, but with the onset of adolescence it settles into a fixed, final animal form.

Adjoa Andoh’s Serafina Pekkala was just perfect though, in a slightly expanded role, Elliot Levey’s cleric was suitably creepy, David Harewood’s Lord Asriel nicely aristocratic and Lesley Manville’s Mrs Coulter was a brilliantly tight ball of malevolent love, matching my thoughts of how the role should be portrayed very well.

Philip Pullman himself stated that the play was "the best adaptation there could ever have been" of his novels.

Broadcast began on BBC One in the United Kingdom and in Ireland on 3 November and on HBO in the United States on 4 November 2019. Artistic Director Hytner will direct the world premiere of His Dark Materials, based on the novels by Philip Pullman, adapted by Nicholas ( Vincent in Brixton) Wright into two plays. The novels by Phillip Pullman are among my all-time favourites and though the idea of translating them to the stage caused me a little trepidation, I was immensely glad of the opportunity of the chance to see the shows. Faced with difficult choices that only later become apparent, he tries unsuccessfully to poison Lord Asriel.Time magazine in the US included Northern Lights ( The Golden Compass) in its list of the 100 Best Young-Adult Books of All Time. At first glance, the worlds represented in Philip Pullman's trilogy of fantasy novels don't seem like easily tractable material - dark or otherwise - for the theatre. Michael Curry, the puppet designer, also does brilliant work in turning the animalistic daemons into internally lit shapes manipulated by black-clad operators. A play cannot hope to emulate the sheer breadth of context, back story or description a novel has access to.

Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials, this brilliant adaptation by Nicholas Wright is a play in two parts. The show combines the epic with the intimate and this provided me, as director, a highly enjoyable challenge.

Will and Lyra's relationship (brilliantly foregrounded) and Pullman's insights are very well interpreted and dramatised by Nicholas Wright in this pacy, orginal and accessible play.
