About this deal

The founder Masataka Taketsuru chose this site in the mountains of Sendai to contrast with his first distillery, Yoichi, located in the coastal area.

The Miyagikyo distillery was built in 1969, in the heart of this natural environment, from which the whiskies draw their softness, elegance, and purity.

Miyagikyo Single Malt is aromatic, fruity, and floral, in contrast the the subtly smoky, coastal whiskies from Yoichi. uk accepts no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products by manufacturers or other third parties. This contrasts with their first distillery of Yoichi in Hokkaido which is situated on the coast and displays a much peatier character.

In anticipation of Nikka Whisky’s 90th Anniversary, the series offers an inside look at the various experiments in the whisky-making process that Nikka has practiced over the years. There’s some darker, more complex notes too, in the form of chocolate, along with candied fruit and some honey. The company's first distillery was built in the northern island of Hokkaido in the coastal town of Yoichi to the west of Sapporo. On the palate, lemon and vanilla flavours come to the fore, followed by notes of fudge and marzipan. This release from the Nikka Whisky team is designed to replace their no age statement variant and is said to contain a range of different aged releases and is matured in ex-Sherry Casks. The nose is some fresh fruit, banana, apricot and oaky, and it could be a little intensive only if you take a deep breath from it. It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson). This rare version of Miyagikyo single malt is part of the “Nikka Discovery” series: an inside look at the various experiments made during the whisky making process at Nikka. Although much of the whisky produced here is for Nikka's house blends, the single malts of Miyagikyo have a cult following and growing reputation among Japanese whisky enthusiasts and have been compared to whiskies from the Speyside region of Scotland - sweet, fruity and mellow.

The distillery is the larger of the two Nikka distilleries, with an annual production capacity of two million litres. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky. Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt is a complex, fruity and soft Japanese single malt made at the Miyagikyo distillery near Sendai in northern Japan. Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the brand is headquartered in Tokyo and is the country's second largest distiller.MODERN AND INNOVATIVE DISTILLERY – Miyagikyo was set up in 1969 after Taketsuru had been making whisky at his more traditional Yoichi distillery for 35 years. Using less peaty malt and distilled in a pot still heated by indirect steam, Miyagikyo single malt has an elegant fruitiness and a distinctive aroma with a strong Sherry cask influence.
