About this deal

For the first time ever, a very special edition of the classic masterpiece, with the complete text and illustrated throughout by the author himself. They realize they are being tracked; on a moonlit night they capture Gollum, who has followed them from Moria. From homely beginnings in the Shire, a hobbit land reminiscent of the English countryside, the story ranges across Middle-earth, following the quest to destroy the One Ring, seen mainly through the eyes of the hobbits Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

He hopes to reach Rivendell, where he will be safe from Sauron, and where those wiser than he can decide what to do about the Ring. Contrary to the maxim " Show, don't tell", the chapter consists mainly of people talking; the action is, as in "The Shadow of the Past", narrated, largely by the Wizard Gandalf, in flashback. Unfinished Tales consists of stories and essays Tolkien failed to complete in his lifetime, stitched together in a more coherent form by Christopher Tolkien, the author’s son and literary executor. There they are attacked at night by five Black Riders, Frodo puts on the Ring to escape them, and is stabbed in the left shoulder by the Witch-King, the captain of the Black Riders.

X · The Breaking of the Fellowship — They arrive at the lawn of Parth Galen; they still face the choice of whether to go east or west; Boromir tries to take the Ring from Frodo, who puts it on to escape him; Other members of the company split up trying to find Frodo.

Tolkien's professional knowledge of philology, too, came to his aid, with careful concern for places and placenames, starting in the rather English Shire and then moving outside it. When they attempt to cross the pass of Caradhras, an unnatural snowstorm nearly buries them, and they are forced to turn back.Tolkien, edited by Humphrey Carpenter, touch on this matter, notably Letters 123, 124 (in which Tolkien explicitly desires to have the works published together), 125, 126, 131, and 133.

First Lines/First Pages of The Fellowship of the Ring: this book is the first of the trilogy, though I know that The Hobbit takes place before LOTR, I decided to start with the trilogy.

And, there's also 'second breakfast', a term that I use a lot, but I don't think it gets used more than 'tween'. Frodo, beleaguered by the physical and psychological toll of the ring, passes into the Undying Lands to find peace, and harmony settles over Middle-earth. III - Three is Company - Frodo sells Bag End, and officially is going to move to a house at Crickhollow in the area beyond Bucklebury in Buckland; he actually plans to disappear without causing too much of a fuss. I started the First Lines and First Pages series in November 2017 as a homage to National Novel Writing Month. H. Auden wrote a positive review in The New York Times, praising the excitement and saying "Tolkien's invention is unflagging, and, on the primitive level of wanting to know what happens next, The Fellowship of the Ring is at least as good as The Thirty-Nine Steps.
