Having served his sentence for several months in Konya and then in the Sinop Fortress Prison, he was released in 1933 in an amnesty granted to mark the 10th anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Turkey. In one of her last letters, Maria says she has got a surprise that she will reveal when they see each other face to face.
The story is told by a colleague who barely knows Raif, and that too adds a cold irony to the storytelling.While he works in his olive fields, his only source of joy is Maria's letters, until one day the letters stop coming.

He ends up at Wannsee, and his thoughts are occupied with questions of intimacy and a meaning in life as he thinks how Heinrich von Kleist and his lover committed suicide together at the very view, and he decides to go back to Maria's house.
He thinks that if even his Maria was going to betray him, then not another person on this Earth is worth his trust and alienizes himself from the society. The works for which he was most admired in his time were imbued by his dreams for the common man, and rooted in his knowledge of the injustices they suffered. Madonna in a Fur Coat' is a pure definition of 'melancholy' and yearning for missed opportunities in life.
Yet when Raif dies in poverty-stricken circumstances surrounded by bickering family, his diary comes to light. When he finally reaches Turkey, he sees that his brother-in-laws have claimed a big portion of the inheritance. When at last they make friends, it becomes clear that Raif’s reason for living cannot be his family. During last year’s election campaign, he went so far as to accuse Turkey’s LGBT community as being in league with Armenians, Kurds, and the hostile foreign powers that funded them.
But there is also a notebook, hidden in his desk drawer at work, which he asks his friend to destroy. Was it Raif's peculiarities that made me feel seen, or Maria's reluctance to believe in the possibility of companionship? But with this book in their hands, they can see that a story that is true to itself, and honest about love, can travel through walls. With time, the newspaper ceased advertising itself as a weekly, promising instead to appear whenever it wasn’t impounded or whenever its editors weren’t locked up. The gap between hope and reality, art and ordinary life, has been explored in many other novels, but rarely with the unaffected simplicity of Madonna in a Fur Coat .recreates a vanished era and dramatises a doomed relationship, and does so with verve, depth and poignancy. But he is not much interested in the glad-eyed widows and the ruined colonialists, or for that matter, in soap. In Turkey, meanwhile, Ali’s death continues to overshadow his life, in much the same way as his life overshadows his work – and with good reason.
