About this deal

I supplemented early on with a look through the Tae Kim sections on casual forms of verbs, since I knew that was what I would see/hear a lot of in culture I was likely to consume. Some parts are a little boring though as it is aimed towards business people and the plays are hilarious. It's clear, gives example sentences in the grammar, uses words you may encounter when you're in the target audience of students or business people, and has these cute little drawings (sometimes silly) to illustrate the point, even when it's already clear. I think Genki and MNN are roughly equivalent, and either one will serve you just fine, so I would choose whichever one has a style that you prefer.

Hat sich nach unserer Dozentin nicht gelohnt, immer die zusätzlichen Arbeitshefte zu kaufen, geht ja aufs Geld und Kopieren kostet ja nicht die Welt! Now that we have reviewed all of the components for both series, we are left with our initial question: which one is the best for self-studying? Therefore, it is important to become used to listening to the sound of the language and then build up the ability to pick out important information though repeated listening. Alles nur, damit wir vorbereitet sind :’D Jedoch ist es für Anfänger wirklich nicht gut geeignet, da muss ich dir Recht geben. As the book has also been made to match the degree of progress of learners using Minna no Nihongo, they can also practice listening to the words and sentence patterns they have just studied. In any event I don’t think it’s going to make or break your studies, so I wouldn’t worry about having made the “right” or “wrong” choice. on top of that you were also forced to choose by yourself if the word needed a particle/postposition or not.

I dislike that it continues to teach you verbs in -masu form as the vocabulary rather than dictionary form after teaching you about plain form, conjugating ‘te’ and ‘ta’ forms etc.Another great benefit is that the series includes both textbooks and workbooks, so you can practice what you’ve learned as you go along. Please use these CDs, along with the CD accompanying the Main Text (containing the Conversations and Exercises found in the main texts), for instruction in class and for student practice. Now back to the main topic, I’m sorry I went a bit off road here, as someone recommended I think I will study and finish the Genki series first and then move to the みんなの日本語 series, from what I’m being told みんなの日本語 is written entirely in Japanese so it might be better to study with it after first being used to Japanese grammar, at least that’s how I’m seeing it. That being said if you’re going to go down the MNN route the workbooks are a must, as in all of them! Like most textbooks, it starts with polite language (which makes sense, since it’s meant for language schools in Japan, and the learners are likely to need to use this stuff quickly, and politely).
