Mouthguards coverings used over the teeth protect the hard and soft tissues of the mouth from sports injury, or worn at night to counter the effects of clenching and grinding, sleep apnoea and snoring. Splints are custom-made devices most commonly made of clear plastic covering and joining teeth for stability. However, a meta-analysis of occlusal splints used for this purpose concluded "There is not enough evidence to state that the occlusal splint is effective for treating sleep bruxism.

Splints are known by a wide variety of names such as: intraoral appliance, stabilization appliance, occlusal appliance, interocclusal appliance, repositioning splint, bruxism splint, night guard, mouth guard, and others with names denoting commercial vendors promoting particular designs.A Michigan splint is made from much harder acrylic and is less likely to be worn down or perforated by clenching and grinding.

Soft night guards are different from Michigan splints as night guards are made of soft acrylic whereas Michigan splints are made of hard acrylic and are more complex to fabricate. According to the National Institutes of Health brochure on TMJ, “if a splint is recommended, it should be for a short time and should not cause permanent changes in the bite (move jaw forward/back or cover only certain teeth). They’re worn with a whitening gel for a few minutes or a few hours a day depending on the product used. Other treatments for a TMD include changing to a soft diet, reducing stress, improving sleep, avoiding extreme jaw movements such as yawning, applying warm packs to the joint, and in some cases prescription of anti-inflammatory or muscle-relaxant medications. However, permanent problems require a permanent answer in cases when removal is not possible due to financial, medical or undetermined reasons.

You just have to place the splints in a glass of water with the tablet and leave them there for about 20 minutes to ensure they’re completely clean.

In addition to wearing a mouth guard/splint, it’s important to identify the root cause of the grinding. Class III jaw relationship or under-bite to avoid a large anterior projecting labial surface of splint which would not be tolerated.Although medications may be helpful even for severe cases of bruxism, they often have side effects when used long term. If you wear a fixed brace, you can have a custom-made mouth guard that’s designed to fit over the top of the brace.
