About this deal

Though the winter weather was mostly mild, there were a few short spells of snow which drove birds into gardens in higher numbers. The first species affected by this are often the birds in the thrush family, including our resident Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush, migrant Redwing from Iceland and Fieldfare from Scandinavia. In the autumn and winter, when there are less insects about, a Great Tit’s diet changes to favour seeds, nuts and berries. Particular favourites during these times are ivy berries, juniper berries, and mistletoe berries. Which Wild Bird Food should I feed Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Great Tits? Male/female: very similar in appearance, although male has brighter colours, particularly on the head

As they’re such popular little birds, we are often asked what Blue Tits like to eat, and if there are any differences in diet between Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Great Tits. Peanuts. Peanuts are a favourite food and will be readily taken at any time of year. We need to be careful about offering these around nesting time though. The best time to put up a new bird box is generally late autumn into winter. You certainly want to get one up and ready for early spring (late January). Realistically, any time is good; the longer it is available the more chance birds have to find it and scope it out as a potential home. As for putting something inside a bird box, the best advice is not to add any kind of nesting material or bedding. If you are in a similar position to me, read on as I explain in more detail the answers to these questions and more… When Is The Best Time To Put Up A Bird Box? On the 22nd morning there was no activity toward the box and I presumed that the youngs had fled. Later in the afternoon, one of the adults appeared making multiple visits to the box but not actually going in, just hopping from the hedge (2ft away) to the outside of the box, making chirping noises. I assume it was coaxing the last fledging out… this behaviour lasted about 2 hours. The adult bird then disappeared and I thought that that was the last visit to the nest. I cautiously looked into the box which at first appeared empty. On more careful inspection, I found 2 possibly three new tiny babies, just hatched. Some birds will use a bird box in the Winter to roost. A bird box provides a safe, warm and dry place for a small bird. So, when thinking about the best time for putting up a bird box, no time is a bad time but for nesting the new year is ideal. The Irish Garden Bird Survey is once again sponsored by Ballymaloe, whose support in recent years has helped ensure the survey has gone from strength to strength, improving monitoring at national level and allowing for greater focus on conservation issues facing individual species. This is where questions arise as to whether supplementary bird feeding is having an indirect impact on specialists like Marsh Tits and Willow Tits through increased competition from dominant, generalist tits. This competition hypothesis is not new but has been explored more deeply in the recent paper by Shutt & Lees (2021). The hypothesis, linked to bird feeding, is centred on increased populations of Blue Tits and Great Tits in the woodlands and spilling over into more marginal habitats, where they are now common or abundant almost everywhere.

Presentation: Present a good quality ground feeder or softbill mix on the bird table or on a ground feeder tray. Ground feeding birds will often be found near to a hanging feeder or bird table, collecting the food that falls to the ground below. You will find that the usual Great Tits, Blue Tits, Green Finches, Robins and others will also feed from the ground, if that is where the food is. We also reveal the gardening jobs to do each month of the year. What ingredients should I look for in fat balls? If you’re a serious gardener and want to protect your manicured lawn, then we recommend our No Mess, No Grow Wild Bird Food, which has all the benefits of High Energy No Mess, but the seeds have been specially treated to ensure they don’t germinate if dropped. Blue tits ( Cyanistes caeruleus) are one of our must numerous birds with 2.5 million being reported in Britain and Ireland (the only places they don’t inhabit are the Shetland and Orkney islands) so it’s very likely you’ll have some living nearby. You can entice them onto your feeders with some very simple steps.Of course it is possible, depending on food sources and location, that our garden birds will choose to tolerate one another and happily occupy boxes closer to one another in the same small garden. Try it and let me know. How To Attract Birds To A Nest Box Your feeders should be regularly cleaned regardless of whether they still have feed in them or not. If the birds aren’t eating what you are offering over 2 – 3 days, give them less food. Food, when left out, can go off if left out for too long. Cleaning your feeders is simple enough to do and will take you five minutes. We’d recommend giving them a once over every week. Most blue tits don’t migrate and will instead stay close to where they hatched, even in the harshest of winters.

And don’t forget the water in the winter – pop a bit of boiling water from the kettle into your birdbath to break up any ice. April and May However, if you really want to attract Blue Tits, Great Tits and Coal Tits to your garden, Premium Wild Bird Food, High Energy No Mess or No Mess No Grow are the blends we really recommend. They are incredibly social birds and can often be seen alongside great tits. A bird table is an ideal space for species to mix, as well as being an open area to keep a watch for predators. What is an appropriate response to the negative effects of bird feeding when uncertainty remains over its true impact? The stakes are high, including potential extinction of Britain’s endemic subspecies of Willow Tit P. m.kleinschmidti, but this must be balanced against the immense enjoyment that people get from bird feeding, not to mention the importance of a multi-million-pound industry that has some commercial relationships with conservation charities.

Feeder construction – for some reason, last week I decided to fill peanut feeder (wire mesh type construction) with some seed mix. It didn’t go well, do not do this! The same steps can be taken to clean bird baths and water stations. If your bird bath is a heavy, permanent fixture, tip or scoop the old water out before cleaning and rinsing out thoroughly.

Which Wild Bird Food should I feed Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Great Tits?

There is a third peak, smaller in size, which occurs during the middle of the day. This peak does not fit with the predictions made by predation-risk models, but may be a consequence of competition between individuals for access to limited food reserves. The smaller, subordinate species (and individuals - e.g. juveniles) may be forced to visit feeders at a time which is not ideal because more dominant species (and individuals) exclude them from the feeders at the better times of day.
