About this deal

In an ideal world, yes, every time. However we understand this is not always possible, for example on a really long ride I carry a small bottle to top up my chain lube and keep everything running smooth and quietly!

Wet lubes can be used all year, offer better value and have the greatest longevity. Whether wet or dry, it’s often a question of how much time and effort you want to put in. You will see that we also sell C3 versions of our wet and dry lubes. The C3 stands for ceramic as these lubes contain nano ceramic particles and synthetic polymers that help improve both performance and longevity meaning your chain is lubricated better for longer. Great for both road bikes and mountain bikes! Unless your bike ride is planned to take place underwater, we’d recommend steering well clear of using grease on your chain. Do aerosol lubes work? The key with bicycle chain lubrication is to get it in the internals of the chain ( among the rollers and pins). Before lubricating, you also need to clean it as thoroughly as possible, to remove contaminants.

It’s fair to say not everyone will have the inclination or patience for it though. After all, outright efficiency and cleanliness almost certainly matter less to most commuters than the ability for your bike to last a couple of weeks in all weathers without cleaning it. How often you need to lube your chain depends on how frequently you ride your bike and the conditions in which you ride it.

It worked and was durable. But many cyclists on the road racing scene took to waxing chains in a frying pan. Secret formulas mixed in the kitchen often led to chains being dipped in bespoke waxy lubricants overnight. This way the drivetrain is far more efficient and you gain extra life out of the whole system, along with no loss of power from the rider. Dry lubes, so-called because they’re designed for riding in dry conditions, are often made up of around 10 per cent lubricant – synthetic oils and additives – and 90 per cent carrier fluid. For wet conditions, the winner is slightly less clear cut, but we’d still recommend waxed-based lubricants for their efficiency. Crucially, however, you’ll have to be prepared to clean your chain immediately after wet rides to prevent corrosion. Once it’s been properly cleaned and treated though, waxed chains have, in our experience, an incredible ability to shrug off dirt and grime.Waxed chains are currently on the throne for both outright performance and drivetrain lifespan. However, even a light rain shower will wash dry lube off the chain and it is less durable; an 80-mile ride in dry conditions can see lubrication drastically reduced. Wet lubes are designed for riding in wet or year-round conditions and, as such, generally contain greater quantities of higher viscosity synthetic oils, as well as additives such as PTFE. Under laboratory conditions, geared bicycle drivetrains have been shown to reach above 98 per cent efficiency, meaning just 2 per cent of energy inputted is lost to friction. If your chain looks anything like this, it’s costing you watts and wearing out your parts. David Rome / Immediate Media

You get more lubricant per millilitre with this type of lube and the increased viscosity of the oils means this type of lubricant should last longer and is much less prone to getting washed off your chain if you encounter water. Apply a moderate amount of Bio Dry Chain Lube to the inside chain link while spinning pedals in a reverse motion

Now leave curing for at least four hours. During the recent heatwave (28-30 degrees) this has been more than adequate. I've left it overnight, in cooler contexts. By this point, it assumes a milky glaze. It's only fair to point out that Muc-Off only rate this lube for use in dry to damp conditions, so the torrential downpour that hit me on the first ride was over and above what you'd expect it to cope with. Muc-Off proudly describe it as biodegradable. For 'biodegradable' read 'water soluble' and sure enough the first application only lasted 36 miles and one shower. The second application managed to struggle on for 67 miles but after another wet commute the chain mice started singing again. That's pretty poor mileage and although your chain runs nice and clean, the trade-off in longevity isn't worth it. Despite the seemingly endless differences, chain lube can be broken down into just two simple categories: wet and dry. How often do I need to apply chain lube?In our experience, the hard part of immersive waxing is usually the initial chain cleaning process. Soggy, salty November outings have made negligible impression upon these characteristics and I've been astounded by how clean my Univega's drivetrain remains despite perpetual exposure to waterlogged, silty lanes with occasional cross country short cuts thrown in for good measure. Its qualities were less obvious on my cross inspired fixer given the inherently simple transmission, but tending to rear wheel punctures has been a notably cleaner business. As well as its well-known multipurpose spray, WD40 does make a specialist bicycle chain lube, which is formulated for the job. Chain lube lowdown Despite the relatively high viscosity, I was stunned by just how thoroughly it had penetrated the chain, and other metal-on-metal surfaces. Bearing in mind, I'd just come from Zefal Pro Dry Chain Lube, friction was lower than the proverbial snake's testicles.
